Dakar Rebuild - part 3
Dismembering the Range Rover
Pulling this to bits was an absolute nightmare as every single nut and bolt had corroded into a large, rusty lump. Spanners and sockets wouldn't look at the majority of them, and so it was a large amount of mini grinder and Dremel action to remove the various bits and pieces.
To cut a long story short, all the important bits were removed in as big chunks as was feasable:
So, I now have a known-good engine and gearbox...
...but there is now a very large hole in the floor of the Range Rover! Not that this matters, however it amazes me how rusty the footwells had got. The reason for removing the transmission tunnel was so that we could get the gearbox out easily. Believe it or not, it was easier to disc the tunnel off and lift the box out from inside the vehicle rather than attempt to remove the gearbox crossmember and lower it out:
I was alternating between pulling the Range Rover and the Dakar to bits. The Dakar is so much easier to work on - it's higher off the ground and just generally seems to have more space around things. And all the nuts undo without having to resort to an angle grinder - see the next page...
